Unlock your inner historian at Hadley’s

With historical and contemporary artworks lining the walls and stories hidden beneath the floorboards, Hadley’s Orient Hotel has been making history in Hobart since 1834. Located in the heart of Hobart, this Victorian-era-style boutique accommodation is the perfect destination to explore the stories of significant cultural events and noteworthy guests.

Hadley’s has a long history with art, and today we continue that tradition with the Hadley’s Art Prize, an annual Australian landscape prize offering $100,000 to the winning entry.

The Hadley’s Art Prize celebrates excellence in contemporary landscape art, restoring art to our historic walls. If you join us in August, you can visit this landscape exhibition for free. But there is always historical and contemporary art to be discovered across the hotel for free, no matter the time of year.

With almost two centuries of history, the floorboards whisper of the hotel’s rich past. A haven for royals, musicians, actors, artists and explorers, Hadley’s has hosted many famous guests. Stay in the same hotel as Sir William Don, Dame Nellie Melba and Bill Murray, and enjoy afternoon tea in the same building where Mawson met expeditioners at a 1911 luncheon.

Hadley’s Orient Hotel also holds many historical tales, and we love to share them. Walk the halls of Hadley’s with the Trail of Terrific Tales, an immersive audio trail of short stories around the hotel. Learn about where early landlord, entrepreneur and ex-convict John Webb brought ice cream — an exclusive treat — to Tasmania for the first time in 1850. Or, discover the state’s first roller skating rink in 1867 that glittered with chandeliers, mirrors and gilt candelabras.

Our documented history and stories make Hadley's Orient Hotel an unforgettable and immersive destination. Book now and unlock your inner historian.
