Sophie Carnell’s silent sentinels

A herbarium of works in silver focussing on the rare plants of lunawanna-alonnah | Bruny Island.

Sophie is a silversmith and contemporary jeweller working from her studio in lunawanna-alonnah / Bruny Island, Tasmania, drawing inspiration from the stunning landscape of Southern Tasmania. Predominantly working in silver though also utilising natural and manmade found materials Sophie creates sculptures, objects and wearable tokens that speak of the worth of our environment; our gratitude for it and degradation of it; of the effects that place can have on its inhabitants and conversely the impact that those occupants can have on their surroundings.

Sophie Carnell is exclusively represented by Gallery Sally Dan-Cuthbert, Sydney.

Hadley’s new audio story telling project launched with a live performance of four of the stories in ‘The Trail of Terrific Tales being brought to life by actor Ben Winspear, musicians Emily Sheppard and Yyan Ng and audio engineer Al Future.

Guests enjoyed drinks and nibbles designed to complement each tale that was re-enacted with live music and sound effects.

Mary Pridmore envisioned holding a retrospective of her life’s work at Hadley’s Orient Hotel. She worked closely with Dr Amy Jackett to design and realize this project. She unfortunately passed away from motor neuron disease weeks away from the exhibition opening.
This Survey Exhibition stood as a celebration of her life in the arts and showcased a range of works as well as personal effects and photos from Mary’s life.

Nine Tasmanian artists were invited to spent time at the hotel to create artworks that respond to our elaborate interior decor.
Taking inspiration from late Victorian designs, the interior decoration at Hadley’s Orient Hotel pays homage to the hotel's beginnings.

Reflecting on the nature and meaning of textiles, these artists interpret their thoughts through drawing, sculpture, jewellery, photography and textile making.
